George Negus

George Negus’ career as a journalist has made him one of Australia’s most recognisable public faces and popular media voices. Growing up in Queensland, he followed a university and teaching career with several years in national newspapers.

He has worked since in both commercial and public broadcasting on 60 Minutes, Foreign Correspondent, the Today Show and This Day Tonight. His television specials and books have taken him across the old Soviet Union and, with Sir Peter Ustinov, he investigated the plight of kids around the world, in particular on the borders of Iran and its flight of refugees.

In 2001, George facilitated ABC TV’s live-to-air travelling 'issues' program, Australia Talks, which successfully canvassed public opinion prior to Australia’s 2001 national election.

During 2003, he commenced hosting and interviewing for the ABCs 6.30pm time slot, which became George Negus Tonight and continued on air until the end of 2004. The trends and issues program travelled the breadth of Australia for stories about Australian history, future issues and trends, people with interesting stories to tell and profiles of well-known and high achieving Australians.

In January 2005, George took over as host of SBS Television's current affairs program Dateline.

Regularly, George is a guest on many of Australia’s top radio programs including ABC mornings, Merrick & Ross’s Nova breakfast and Triple M’s national brekky program, The Cage as well as lending his considerable sports knowledge to Australia’s endless array of media outlets covering our national obsession!

George is a sought after speaker and facilitator for his warmly delivered, articulate and incisive insights into Australian political and social affairs. As well, his international perspective draws on his globe-trotting journalism days, which over 30 years took him into far flung corners of the world. From Belize to Berlin, Negus has observed first-hand most world cultures and their defining economic, political and human idiosyncrasies.

Years of experience in public and international observation, interviewing, reading and listening contribute Negus understanding of everyday and big picture management and business dilemmas.

Senior management are comfortable with George and their staff, are keen to hear what he has to say and can be encouraged to start thinking a little differently about various issues affecting their jobs and work environments and clients.

George Negus’ extensive speaking topics include: ¨ “Australia - Are We Ready for the Third Way?”; “Life as a Foreign Correspondent”; and “The Personalities of Power”. His vast experience invariably sees him in Australia’s Top Speakers category.

George’s personal profile is synonymous with his professional one. In tandem with TV, radio and print commitments, 2002 saw the release of the 7th and paperback edition of his Harper Collins best seller The World From Italy: Football, Food and Politics. Reviewed by James Murray of the Weekend Australian as a “rather extraordinary book – fascinating”, Murray went on to say “the value” of the book “is in initiating a debate and discovering that although we share a common humanity, we are very different creatures socially.” Stirring the possum, as George would say, gets people talking about a lot of important things.

In October 2004 an updated paperback edition of Negus’ best seller The World From Islam was published. It adds new thoughts on the complex topics of faith, war and Islam. In his inimitable no-nonsense style, Negus is hell-bent on demystifying the issues, the misconceptions and prejudice that have set the Islamic and non-Islamic worlds against each other.

For 25 years, George has travelled extensively throughout the Middle East, camping in goat-hair tents with Bedouins, partying in marble palaces, strolling across the infamous Allenby Bridge and wandering the ancient streets of Jerusalem in his quest to decipher the way of life that is Islam. His observations are frank; his insights timely. You’ll be wiser for the read.
