Music Theatre Australia and MTA One Stop Entertainment, a special event entertainment company, were created out of the success of one of Australia's most talented singing groups, Pot-Pourri. Pot-Pourri began its life in 1987 as a trio known as "The Hums of Pooh" at the smoky Madigan's night club in Brunswick, Victoria. Since then it has played to over a million people in 25 countries, helped make opera and music theatre more accessible to a wider audience nationally and internationally, created an innovative form of cabaret entertainment for special events and provided invaluable professional employment to some of Australia's most talented artists.
Music Theatre Australia and Pot-Pourri artists have performed in major venues and festivals including the Melbourne Concert Hall, Seoul Arts Centre, Melbourne International Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Barossa International Festival, National Opera Festival, Castlemaine State Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival and numerous overseas festivals.
MTA is committed to divesting opera of its grand and elitist image and to re-establishing it as a genuinely popular and affordable art form. It places as much emphasis on drama as musicianship: exploring the many possible relationships of music to theatre. In addition, MTA believes in the power of all performing arts to connect with people on a deep emotional level and to transform, uplift and inspire. Since 1987 Music Theatre Australia has presented some innovative productions of classic repertoire and adaptations and commissioned new work for public seasons and for a range of special events.
These include Figaro! Figaro! Figaro! (an adaptation of Mozart and Beaumarchais' The Marriage of Figaro), a completely original piece Rapunzel - The Musical! with composition, libretto, costumes, design, direction and performance by the company and an innovative, brilliantly costumed and a highly acclaimed new production of Pergolesi's La Serva Padrona entitled The Maid, her Master, his Mistress and the Butler .
Music Theatre Australia has organised over 35 overseas tours (for Pot-Pourri, physical theatre and circus artists, musicians and bands) to countries including Italy, Germany, USA, Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and New Zealand and has often been engaged to showcase the talent of Australian artists in Australia and overseas for a range of concerts, festivals, conferences and special events. Music Theatre Australia was selected as one of the companies to be part of the 1999 Reaching the World Festival for the 2000 Olympic Games.
Pot-Pourri has produced and released five albums: Rhythm of Life, Something Familiar! Something Peculiar!, This is the Moment, Friends for Life and Chanson d’amour.
Music Theatre Australia also created a primary education program featuring The Warbles. This program is now targeted to needy children through the auspices of the not-for-profit organization The Song Room and has so far introduced over forty thousand children to the joys of the performing arts, in particular music theatre and opera.
Music Theatre Australia One Stop Entertainment developed from the success of Music Theatre Australia and Pot-Pourri. Clients of Pot-Pourri and Music Theatre Australia requested assistance in sourcing bands, roving performers and a range of other artists suitable for corporate and private functions. At the same time, other entertainers wanting to find work in the corporate sector approached Pot-Pourri performers. And so MTA One Stop Entertainment, a national and international entertainment agency and related event and production services, was born in 1996. With a professional and passionate team and a stable of talented, innovative and professional artists and production personnel, MTA One Stop Entertainment can source customised entertainment and create unique productions and events to suit any occasion or budget, in an easy stress-free way. |
