Formed in 2005, the Melbourne Guitar Quartet (MGQ) is a vibrant guitar-based ensemble dedicated to the development of chamber music repertoire for the instrument. Utilising the unique concept of the Guitar Family of instruments (classical bass guitar, baritone guitar, standard guitar, treble guitar and octave guitar), the award-winning MGQ are continuously cultivating ground-breaking arrangements of major works for this idiom.

MGQ exhibit the broader timbral spectrum of the instruments through use of the Guitar Family, while incorporating percussion instruments into their arrangements, MGQ embody a dynamic and theatrical on-stage musical persona. In 2008 MGQ released their debut CD Four Elements to critical acclaim. In April 2009, Four Elements was the featured album on ABC Classic FM's 'On the Verandah' segment, which focuses on talented Australian performers.

MGQ have performed at the 7th Darwin International Guitar Festival, Melbourne Acoustic Guitar Festival, Castlemaine State Festival and the Quiet Music Festival. They have performed at Hamer Hall, Chapel off Chapel, Federation Square, Montsalvat and the National Gallery of Victoria. The Quartet is the recipient of numerous awards, including 1st prize in the Athenaeum Chamber Music Prize at the Victorian College of the Arts and the Cone of Silence for most popular act at the 2008 Quiet Music Festival.
