Tim Lane began broadcasting sport on ABC Radio in Launceston in 1973 and transferred to the Melbourne office in 1979. He went on to be a regular member of the ABC’s football commentary teams, covering VFL/AFL on Radio and, in earlier times, on TV.

Tim started with ABC TV as a part-time commentator in Tasmania in 1973. After 18 months, he gained a full time job with the Sports Department in Hobart where he worked for five years, before his appointment in 1985 as Sports Editor, Victoria.

In 1988/89 he joined the cricket commentary team, covering tests and one-day internationals every Australian summer since.

From his earliest days, Tim saw the Commonwealth and Olympic Games as professional ambitions. "In much the same way as an athlete might, I thought that if I could prove myself as a commentator, I could represent Australia at these great events," says Tim.

He achieved his goal when he joined ABC TVs commentary team at the Brisbane Commonwealth Games as Track commentator. He was part of the commentary team that won a Logie for the Best Sports Telecast at that event.

While working with ABC TV, Tim was one of the station's main football commentators. His voice is also well known to listeners for his cricket commentaries.

At the Seoul Olympics in 1988, Tim was part of the team awarded the gold medal at the New York Radio Festival for their coverage of the Men's Marathon. Listeners will undoubtedly remember his exciting commentary on the basketball as well.

Following his commentary of the Seoul Olympics, Tim joined ABC Radio permanently in 1989.

During his time with ABC Radio, Tim has covered the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the 1990 Auckland, New Zealand, Commonwealth Games, and the 1994 Victoria, Canada, Commonwealth Games.

In 1996 Tim will add to this impressive list when he commentates on the Track and Field events for ABC Radio at the Atlanta Olympic Games.

In 2001 he chalked up his twentieth Grand Final call.

He has also covered Australian tours of South Africa, India, Pakistan, and England, as well as broadcasting the thrilling 1999 World Cup victory from England. Tim has covered five Olympic Games, beginning in 1984 in Los Angeles, and five Commonwealth Games.

In 2003 Tim joined Network Ten’s ALF team.
